Electric Sandwich was founded in Bonn at the end of 1969 as a group of freelance session musicians. Instead of developing a repertoire as usual, they decided to play whatever came to mind. "Have fun" was their motto. Soon the stable line-up of the group had worked out several arranged compositions that left plenty of room for improvisation and which perfectly illustrated the high level of energy, especially on stage. The group began as a quartet. Each of the musicians had played somewhere before. Bassist Klaus Lormann, a law student, had performed with Chaotic Trust; guitarist Jörg Ohlert, a physics student, had played in Slaves Of Fire; drummer Wolf Fabian, the founder of the group, had toured with Muli And The Misfits; and singer-saxophonist Jochen Carthaus had sung in Flashbacks before. The group was discovered by the manager of the label "Brain" Gunther Korber. He also invited them to the national talent festival "Hör Zu", organized by German television, which took place in Hanover. "Electric Sandwich" took part in this competition, although they did not make it to the final. The embittered musicians somehow managed to persuade the organizers to let them on stage and perform and... the jury awarded them second place! That same evening, the musicians signed a contract with "Brain" for trial sessions. The people from "Metronome" really liked the fact that "Electric Sandwich" was introduced to them and in 1972 they gave the go-ahead to sign a contract with the musicians. They went to Dieter Dierks' studio in Stommeln and recorded their debut album there, which was released in early 1972 and consisted of seven compositions, the style of which is scattered between jazz, blues, rock and psychedelic rock. After the release of the album, Electric Sandwich went on a planned tour of the country. They performed on the Saturday Show on BFBS and also took part in a special broadcast on ARD. Then organist Ralf Kroschek, a student at the Cologne College of Music, joined the band and together they went on tour with British rock stars Uriah Heep. Kroschek was called upon to fill the gap that had appeared when saxophonist Carthaus was drafted into the army. Beginning in late 1973, Electric Sandwich began working on a second album, but, alas, it was never completed. The band fell apart, tormented by the musicians' passionate desire to quickly start a solo career and disagreements about the future style of the band. Today, drummer Wolf Fabian runs a company and a recording studio in Bonn and also works part-time as a teacher. Jochen Carthaus lives on a farm in the Eifel, in western Germany, where he breeds horses. Bassist Klaus Lormann is a civil servant in Cologne
