Essentials of Business Statistics: Communicating with Numbers is a core statistics textbook that sparks student interest and bridges the gap between how statistics is taught and how practitioners think about and apply statistical methods. Throughout the text, the emphasis is on communicating with numbers rather than on number crunching. By incorporating the perspective of professional users, the subject matter is more relevant and the presentation of material more straightforward for students. Microsoft Excel is arguably the most widely used computer application among business and nonbusiness professionals. In fields such as marketing, finance, health care, sports, and politics, professionals use Excel spreadsheets for everyday tasks. Oftentimes, these tasks involve entering, editing, and formatting data as well as performing data analysis. Excel is used throughout this text as the tool for analytics. Features New to the Third Edition We have made substantial revisions that address the current needs of the market. These revisions are based on the feedback of countless reviewers and users of our earlier editions. In addition, we have incorporated many of the recommendations from the 2016 Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics (GAISE) College Report that was endorsed and published by the American Statistical Association. As the title suggests, this edition focuses exclusively on Microsoft Excel. Most problems are solved with Excel rather than using tedious calculations with formulas and/ or statistical tables. There are four major innovations in this edition. More Emphasis on Data Preparation and Visualization ∙ We include new sections in Chapter 1 devoted to data preparation. ∙ We include new sections in Chapter 2 devoted to data visualization methods. ∙ We discuss subsetted means in Chapter 3. ∙ We use pivot tables to analyze empirical probabilities in Chapter 4. More Reliance on Excel and Connect ∙ We remove the dependence on z-, t-, χ2 -, and F-tables in all relevant chapters. ∙ We use Excel to explore concepts and solve problems. ∙ We provide Excel instructions in several exercises in Connect. ∙ We have improved the Connect product to facilitate teaching in an online environment. Significant Rewrite of Regression and Forecasting ∙ We streamline the discussion of goodness-of-fit measures in Chapter 12. ∙ We include a revised section on model assumptions and common violations in Chapter 12. ∙ We expand the coverage of regression with interaction variables in Chapter 13. ∙ We include a stand-alone discussion of forecasting models in Chapter 14. ∙ We have improved visualizations to explore regression and forecasting models in Chapters 12–14. More Relevant Discussion ∙ We include numerous new examples, exercises, and case studies. ∙ We use updated data to make the applications more current. ∙ We use big data in the writing sections for Chapters 1, 2, 3, 12, and 13. ∙ We use one of the big data sets to create several Connect questions, spanning multiple chapters, that can serve as a capstone project
