The action of Conscript takes place in 1916 during the Battle of Verdun, or more precisely - the defense of Fort de Vaux against the advancing German troops. The main character of the game is Andre, who joined the French army in the company of his brother Pierre. During one of the enemy attacks, the protagonist lost consciousness, and when he regained it, he noticed that all members of his unit (and therefore also his brother) had been killed or missing. Andre decides to go to rescue Pierre and his remaining allies.
In Conscript, the action is shown from a bird's eye view. Traveling through extensive locations, including muddy trenches, a devastated city, gloomy undergrounds, a fort and the so-called no man's land, we complete tasks that push the plot forward. In addition, we solve various puzzles, including: by manipulating elements of the environment (we can look at some of them closely) or by searching for specific items, thus gaining access to blocked parts of the levels. In addition, during the game we face opponents, including both enemy soldiers and terrifying figments of the protagonist's imagination.
The pixel art graphics of Conscript are kept in a gloomy style. Sparse lighting and "dirty" colors effectively create a gloomy atmosphere, which is intensified by the dark soundtrack.
