Plot: De weduwe Sara Goldfarb krijgt te horen dat ze uitgekozen is om in een spelshow mee te doen. Aangezien ze niet meer in haar favoriete jurk past, begint ze met dieetpillen, waar ze al snel aan verslaafd raakt. Ondertussen mislukken de pogingen van haar zoon Harry, z'n vriendin en een vriend om het te maken in de drugsscene. Langzamerhand glijden de hoofdpersonages verder en verder weg in een neerwaartse spiraal van drugsgebruik, misdaad en prostitutie.
