The book provides an exhaustive coverage of two- and three-dimensional heat conduction, forced and free convection, boiling and radiation heat transfer, heat exchangers, computer methods in heat transfer, and mass transfer. The main emphasis is on the understanding of fundamental concepts and their application to complex problems. The first edition of Heat Transfer received warm response from reputed universi ties and institutes in India and abroad. It gives me great pleasure to present this second edition to the engineering academic community. I sincerely hope that this revised and enlarged edition of the book will aid students in understanding the ba sic concepts and principles of the subject and awake in them the interest to know more of the vast field of heat and mass transfer. Heat transfer refers to energy transport due to a temperature difference in a medium or between media. Heat is not a storable quantity and is defined as energy in transit due to a temperature difference. The primary aim of studying the science of heat transfer is to understand the mechanism of heat transfer processes and to predict the rate at which heat transfer takes place. Whenever we refer to heat transfer we actually imply the heat transfer rate. It is this ‘rate’ that differentiates the field of heat transfer from thermodynamics. Climatic changes, formation of rain and snow, heating and cooling of the earth’s surface, the origin of dew drops and fog, spreading of forest fires are some of the natural phenomena wherein heat transfer plays a dominant role. The applications. of heat transfer are diverse, both in nature and in industry. Introduction. Steady-state Conduction: One-dimensional Problems. Steady-state Conduction: Two- and Three-dimensional Problems. Unsteady-state Conduction. Forced Convection Heat Transfer. Natural Convection Heat Transfer. Boiling and Condensation. Radiation Heat Transfer. Heat Exchangers. Finite-difference Methods in Heat Conduction. Mass Transfer. Solidification and Melting
