Formed in Middlesborough in 1968 by John Whittingham, Psycle was intially named thus as a nod to the psychedelic music that inpsired him, but the spelling was quickly amended to Cycle as Whittingham decided that not enough people would understand the pun! With John on lead guitar and vocals, his subsequent brother-in-law Ronnie Patterson on bass and Norman Smith on drums, the trio quickly acquired a significant following on the local circuit, supporting Van der Graaf generator, Atomic Rooster and Mott The Hoople at their regular haunt, the Redcar Jazz Club. In late 1971, they made a demo album at SRT Studios in Bedfordshire to showcase their sound (and John's songs), pressing up 99 copies and selling them at gigs. Sadly, though, they remained very much a regional secret with Whittingham's guitar prowess earning him enduring local hero status
