Are you excited to see me? Frank Skinner asked the sold-out Assembly George Square Theatre on Friday evening. You should be. There arent many grey-haired male celebrities still at large. At once calmly edgy, cheerfully self-obsessed and self-mocking, and emphatically preoccupied with the passing years, this declaration very much set the tone for this opening night of Skinners run at the Edinburgh Fringe. When my colleague Dominic Cavendish caught this show's very first airing back last November, in London he found Skinner breaking himself in rather gently to what was his first live outing since 2007. Happy to say, however, the celebrated Midlander now appears to have found a livelier groove. The show is called Man in a Suit, which in a sense cuts to what makes it so enjoyable. For there is not a shred of fancy son-et-lumire here, just a welter of very superior writing, delivered with utmost confidence in that slow, pensive, oh-so-familiar West Bromwich drawl. In short, Skinner is an old pro, and it shows. The former Perrier winner and (with David Baddiel) Fantasy Football League supremo is now 57, a household name, and by the sounds of it despite famously falling victim to the credit crunch not exactly on skid row. This gives much of the set an unusual double slant: an inveterate lad and mischief-maker Skinner may still be, but he is also an unusually high-status one. For every joke that one would blush to repeat in a family publication, there is also a snooty quip celebrating his fame and fortune (in fact, the show is in some ways a cousin of Baddiels own celebrity-themed Fringe offering from last year). But it is when Skinner a surprisingly good mimic, as it happens is nearest the knuckle that his synapses often fire most creatively. Theres a superb and repeatedly surprising sequence about rows with his girlfriend. And his outrageous, blink-of-an-eye dart from multiplex snack food to the Prince of Waless love life would be entirely reprehensible were it not so clever and, above all, so funny.
