La storia comincia col funerale dei criminali albanesi che Bryan Mills aveva ucciso nel film precedente per salvare la figlia Kim, e il padre di uno di loro, un importante boss, giura vendetta. A Los Angeles, Bryan continua la sua solita vita, lavora ogni tanto come guardia del corpo e cerca di stare il più possibile vicino alla moglie Lenore, che sta divorziando dal suo secondo marito, e alla figlia, che Bryan cerca di aiutare nelle lezioni di scuola guida. Kim però si lamenta che suo padre ha un atteggiamento troppo protettivo e opprimente, al punto che quando scopre che Kim ha un fidanzato, va subito a recuperarla a casa di quest'ultimo senza degnare il ragazzo di un saluto.......................
