Pérsia, Idade Média. Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) é um jovem príncipe, que auxilia o irmão a conquistar uma cidade. Lá ele encontra uma estranha e bela adaga, a qual decide guardar. Tamina (Gemma Arterton), a princesa local, percebe que Dastan detém a adaga e tenta se aproximar dele para recuperá-la. A adaga possui o poder de fazer seu portador viajar no tempo, quando dentro dela há areia mágica. Só que Dastan é vítima de um golpe. Ele é o encarregado de entregar ao pai, o rei Sharaman (Ronald Pickup), uma túnica envenenada, que o mata. Perseguido como se fosse um assassino, ele precisa agora provar sua inocência e impedir que a adaga caia em mãos erradas.
