Dan returned to the studio in 2004 with a new collection of tunes for "Selected Shorts", a title which he says he had in mind for some time. "No Song Too Long!", read the liner notes.
Several reviews of "Shorts", including one in The New Yorker, deem it to be on a par with the best of Dan's 70s era classics.
A crackerjack band takes on the role of "Hot Licks", including legendary drummer Jim Keltner, and Dylan bassist Tony Garnier (who was also an early member of Asleep At The Wheel). Argentinian gypsy jazz guitarist Gonzalo Bergara swings out in best Django-disciple style, and legendary 70s Hot Licks violinist "Symphony" Sid Page is back. The Lickettes, for this outing, include Bobbi (Mrs. Sid) Page, and the irrepressible Susan Rabin.
Seven new Dan-penned songs are featured here, including "Hey Bartender", a ironic, laconic blues lament for some lost keys, and the wistful "Cue The Violins". Dan's also brought back some favorites from 1994's "Shootin' Straight" (now out of print), like "Willie" and "Barstool Boogie", joined on the latter by Jimmy Buffett.
Other vocal cameos are presented by Willie Nelson, and the Butthole Surfers' Gibby Haynes. One of the standout cuts, "C'mon-A-My House", showcases Dan's jazz stylings on the 1951 Rosemary Clooney classic.
