The band was formed in 1969 by the Tieken brothers from Quincy, Illinois. They were originally called “Freddy Tieken And The Rockers” and had been playing since the late 1950s. Gerry Gabel and Craig Moore joined from the group “Gonn”. Then they changed their name to “American Music Band”. Then they finally became “Ilmo Smokehouse”. With their aggressive and interesting mixture of hard rock with blues and prog elements, they were always well received. They made a name for themselves by constantly touring and sharing the stage with such giants as “MC5”, “Big Brother & The Holding Company”, “The Amboy Dukes”, “Brownsville Station”, “James Gang”, “Sugarloaf”, “Crow”, “The Flock” and BB King! Their only album was recorded in Memphis at “Beautiful Sound Studio”, owned by Dan Penn from “Box Tops” together with his partner Jim Johnson. Steve Gaines played with them briefly before joining Lynyrd Skynyrd. After Gabel left the band, they became Smokehouse and began playing prog with glitter rock elements
