Merlín was the fusion of two great Argentine rock musicians: Gustavo Montesano (leader of Crucis) and Alejandro De Michele (leader of Pastoral). In 1980 they published this unique album, which stylistically fused rock and pop, where it is easy to recognize the styles of Crucis and Pastoral in the compositions.
Gustavo Dones and Francisco Ojstertek also participate in the recording on bass, Roberto Villace on keyboards and Daniel Colombres on drums, a band that also accompanied them live. The album had very little circulation, added to this, the deep ego of its members ended up disintegrating the duo as soon as the work was released, at the end of 1980. After that, Alejandro De Michele would rearm Pastoral and Montesano would emigrate to Spain to form the group Ole-Ole.
"Almost simultaneously with the appearance of this long play in record stores, Gustavo Montesano and Alejandro de Michele resoundingly broke off their short musical relationship. This detail matters to the extent that "Merlin" - despite its former leaders - represents two trends Gustavo Montesano's music is identified with an elaborate rock, in which the keyboards weave dense orchestrations on which the other instruments evolve. De Michele bases his style on the progressive folk that characterized Pastoral, with its high-pitched vocalizations, and even. obsessive. In some songs both musical lines converge and the result is quite interesting. "Tea in Paris" is the strongest number on the album, the choruses of Montesano-De Michele achieve an intense, metallic music effect. "I wanted to be the best" are other examples of truly innovative hard rock. The texts suffer from certain defects in their construction, but they demonstrate a marked intention to say important things. Merlin no longer exists, and this album will remain as the band's musical epitaph. With an equal number of successes and mistakes - being a first album - it is strange how many people linked to rock rejected this duo and everything that came out of it. Merlín fue la fusion de dos grandes musicos del rock argentino: Gustavo Montesano (lider de Crucis) y Alejandro De Michele (lider de Pastoral). En 1980 publicaron este unico album, que estilisticamente fusionaba el rock y el pop, donde es facil reconocer los estilos de Crucis y Pastoral en las composiciones.
En la grabacion participan ademas Gustavo Dones y Francisco Ojstertek en bajo, Roberto Villace en teclados y Daniel Colombres en batería, banda que tambien los acompaño en vivo. El disco, contó con muy poca difusión, sumado a esto, el profundo ego de sus integrantes terminó por desintegrar el dúo apenas editado el trabajo, a fines de 1980. Luego de ello Alejandro De Michele rearmaría Pastoral y Montesano emigraria a España para formar el grupo Ole-Ole.
"Casi simultáneamente con la aparición de este long play en las disquerías, Gustavo Montesano y Alejandro de Michele rompían estrepitosamente su corta relación musical. Este detalle importa en la medida que "Merlin" —mal que les pese a sus ex líderes- representa dos tendencias musicales. La de Gustavo Montesano se identifica con un rock elaborado, en el que los teclados traman densas orquestaciones sobre las que evolucionan los demas instrumentos. De Michele basa su estilo en el folk progresivo que caracterizó a Pastoral, con sus vocalizaciones agudas, y hasta obsesivas. En algunas canciones ambas líneas musicales convergen y el resultado es bastante interesante. "Té en París" es el número más fuerte del álbum, los coros de Montesano-De Michele consiguen un efecto intenso, de música metálica. "Demonios cuenta" y "Quería ser el mejor" son otros ejemplos de un rock duro, verdaderamente novedoso. Los textos adolecen de ciertos defectos en su armado, pero demuestran una marcada intención por decir cosas importantes. Merlín ya no existe más, y este álbum quedará como el epitafio musical de la banda. Con igual cantidad de aciertos y errores —tratándose de un primer disco—, es extraña la forma en que mucha gente vinculada al rock rechazó a este dúo y todo lo que de él saliera. ¿A quién le molestaba que Merlín triunfase?."
