Den magnifika och världsberömda berättelsen om fantomen som terroriserar skådespelarna och arbetarna på Operan i Paris medan han uppvaktar den vackra och skönsjungande körsångerskan Christine. Fantomen lyckas driva sopransolisten till vansinne så att hon en kväll lämnar operan och därmed ger Christine möjligheten att ta över hennes roll. Detta blir dock för mycket för sopranen som, rädd att någon annan ska ta hennes plats, återvänder kvällen därpå.

Fantomen kräver dock att Christine ska få fler huvudroller och galen av kärlek till henne, kidnappar han Christine för att göra henne till sin brud. Vicomte de Chagny tvingas ta upp jakten för att rädda henne...
