Synopsis: Story of a seemingly ordinary man who has an extraordinary life. The candid account of Barney (Paul Giamatti), as he tells us, through four decades and two continents, and leads us by the many good times and some bad ones of his long and colorful life. The reason that Barney has to tell his story, or at least his version, is that your worst enemy just published a revealing book that brings out the most embarrassing chapters Barney's past: the many and numerous shady business deals sometimes that led to success, the three couples who have come to an end, and - here comes the biggest problem - the mysterious disappearance of Biggie's best friend, Barney, a possible murder for which Barney is still the prime suspect. As his memory begins to fail, and has a bad habit of getting drunk until he lost consciousness at key moments, Barney leads unsteadily along the road of memories, not only to explain his life to others, but to explain it himself.
We witness his three marriages, each representing an "act" differently in their lives. We know his first wife, Clara (Rachelle Lefevre), a redhead blatantly unfaithful and free spirit with which Barney discovers the bohemian life in Rome. After returning to Montreal, he met the second Mrs. P. (Minnie Driver), a rich Jewish princess who buys and talks incessantly, and does not realize that Barney just listening. During her lavish wedding to his second wife, Barney knows and decides to marry Miriam (Rosamund Pike), his third wife and one true love, a mother of two children. During their life together, many believe, and sometimes also Barney, which has killed Boogie (Scott Speedman), the friend you love and envy, and one day disappear, taking the youth of Barney.
Cash, as he calls it, "the true story of my wasted life," Barney is guilty of honor, showing each and every one of its defects, demonstrating a self-harm wit that challenges us not to love him. But it is impossible not to forgive someone as smart, funny and conscious as Barney. Not only is a born romantic, but as evidenced by their undying love for Miriam, but is capable of devious acts of gallantry, generosity and kindness when he least expects it, and neither do we. His life is no "wasted", in contrast, lived large. The unforgettable Barney Panofsky had a life full to overflowing.
Production notes: Based on the novel's version of Mordechai Richler Barney.
