Chris (Charlie Sheen) is a young recruit newly arrived in an American battalion in the midst of the Vietnam War. Idealist, Chris was a volunteer to fight in the war because he believes he must defend his country, just as his grandfather and his father did in previous wars. But gradually, with the coexistence of the other recruits and the officers that surround him, he loses his innocence and goes on to experience at close quarters all the violence and madness of a senseless carnage.
