On Debian Stretch, the dependencies were not available, but installing all mono libraries and just extracting the files with cpio and tar worked. If the game crashes with an error about some HTTP libraries, open up ~/.local/share/Zachtronics Industries/SpaceChem/config.ini and change enableReporting from True to False
