German military officer Wilhelm Grimm is tried for crimes committed during the Second World War and his life and career is shown in a series of flashbacks. Grimm returns seriously injured and disenchanted from the Great War to a village on the German-Polish border, his subsequent actions caused him banishment from the community and he becomes attracted to the Nazi Party. The movie is staggering in its prescience. It is so on the money that it is actually hard to believe it wasn't made ten years after the end of the Second World War.
