Jasmine, una bellissima donna di classe, si sta trasferendo da New York, dove conduceva una vita agiatissima, a San Francisco, nello squallido appartamento della sua sorella adottiva Ginger. Fin dalle prime scene è evidente come Jasmine abbia dei problemi psicologici: la donna seduta accanto a lei in aereo racconta a suo marito di averla vista parlare da sola per tutto il volo. Una volta a San Francisco Jasmine riflette sulla sua vita, cercando il modo di ricominciare da zero; in alcuni flashback vediamo il suo passato accanto al ricco uomo d'affari Hal......
